Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure that your tattoo heals beautifully and retains its color and shape. Here are step-by-step instructions, including recommendations for aftercare products.
Immediate Aftercare
Saniderm/Dermshield: Leave the bandage on for 5- 7 days (if bandage is leaking fluid, begins to tear or fall off, or is red/irritated around the edges, remove immediately and follow standard cleaning procedure explained below.) It is recommended to leave the bandage on for 5-7 days and once it is removed you can begin cleaning and moisturizing as described below.
Plastic Wrap: Leave on until you are home and able to properly clean the tattoo (no more than 2 hours). This protects your tattoo from airborne bacteria.
After removing the Saniderm or plastic wrap, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial, mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.
First 2 weeks: Keeping It Clean
Wash your tattoo 2-3 times a day with the same mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your clean hands to gently lather and rinse, then pat it dry each time with a paper towel or air dry.
Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or picking at your tattoo. Let it naturally shed any dead skin.
Days 1-2 Weeks: Lubriderm Moisturizing
After washing, apply a thin layer of Lubriderm or any other fragrance-free, non-FPS lotion to your tattooed area. Make sure to use the lotion sparingly; you want to keep the tattoo moisturized, not overly greasy. (Aquaphor is not recommended)
Repeat this moisturizing process 2-3 times a day. Keep your tattoo hydrated, but don't overdo it. Applying too much lotion can suffocate the tattoo and hinder the healing process.
Additional Aftercare Tips
Avoid exposing your new tattoo to direct sunlight, hot tubs, swimming pools, or saunas for at least 2 weeks to prevent fading and infection.
Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo to minimize friction and irritation.
Resist the urge to scratch or pick at your healing tattoo. This can lead to scarring and color loss.
If your tattoo scabs or peels, do not forcibly remove them. Let them come off naturally to avoid damaging the ink.
Be mindful of your tattoo's surroundings. Keep pets, dirty hands, and anything that could introduce bacteria away from your healing tattoo.
Long-Term Care
Continue to protect your tattoo from excessive sun exposure. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when exposed to the sun.
Always moisturize your tattoo when it feels dry or tight, even after it's fully healed. This will help maintain its vibrancy and longevity.
Remember, everyone's skin heals differently, and it's crucial to listen to your body and adapt your aftercare routine accordingly. If you notice any signs of infection, excessive redness, or prolonged irritation, consult a healthcare professional. Follow these aftercare instructions diligently, and you'll have a beautifully healed tattoo to cherish for a lifetime.
